Industry specific courses at level 2 that are accessible for learners with intellectual disabilities who want to progress to employment.
On Tuesday 19th December, City of Dublin ETB, Adult Education Service Finglas in collaboration with Down Syndrome Ireland hosted an event in the Conrad Hotel. The event was to launch ‘Work Ready Programmes’. These courses are an initiative of the Adult Literacy for Life Strategy and were funded through the innovation and collaboration fund.
Work Ready Programmes are industry specific courses that are aimed at level 2 and designed to be accessible for learners with intellectual disabilities. The courses include:
- Working in Retail
- Working in an Office
- Working in a Hotel
- Working in a Café/Restaurant
- Working in a Hairdressers/Barbers
The content of each course is based on consultation with industry experts including SuperValu, Down Syndrome Ireland, The Conrad Hotel, The Together Academy and Grafton Barbers. These partners are leading the way in inclusion in action and have valuable experience employing staff members with intellectual disabilities. Learner voice has also been embedded in each module from the start, with thanks to our student focus group, who met regularly to share their opinions and give feedback on the content and drafts.
Each course has a student workbook and there is one over all tutor handbook. The workbooks will soon be available to download from the website. We encourage Adult Education providers to get involved in delivering the programmes in their locality around the country.
